Cost of cutting councillors was exaggerated

Your slur on councillors (May 19) was noted with dismay at the National Association of Councillors meeting in Cookstown.

It was further noted that the articles within the body of the paper do not uphold the contention on page one. Councillors have been waiting since 2001, and were looking forward to the reorganisation and the establishment of 11 new councils after the local government elections in May 2011.

This association finds it unacceptable to malign councillors in such a way when the fault lies beyond their control. Also, the reduction in the number of councillors would cost in total an estimated £2.5m, which bears no relationship to the £438m which was your misleading headline.
