Council right to reject easing of trading rules
I am writing to congratulate and commend members of Belfast City Council for defeating longer Sunday trading hours.
It was an excellent response to a campaign by my Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) colleagues, based upon reason and evidence.
Sunday is a special day and matters to the citizens across the UK as a whole.
That's why all parts of the UK should consider strengthening, rather than weakening, Sunday trading regulation.
For example, Remembrance Sunday is surely an extra-special Sunday, like Easter Sunday? Thus, there is a prima facie case for shop closure on Remembrance Sunday to enhance the qualities one associates with Remembrance Sunday as understatement, quiet, dignity and decorum.
And such a move will be a boost for retail, as more goods will be brought from the shops prior to a one-day closure.
