Council should not be caught in flags dispute

Published 24/01/2013

As a citizen of Belfast, I am at a loss to understand how a civic forum made the assumption it had any right to fly any national flag, when it is only a civic forum.

Belfast councillors may perceive themselves as individuals, or representatives of parties, that are elected to act in some way as a microcosm of regional government. The council's priority should be to serve the citizens of the city which they have been elected to represent.

For councillors to take it upon themselves to dispute and resolve an issue which members of the Assembly had already resolved is something beyond their station.
