Cut in hospital beds is bizarre

One of the manifest problems of our health service has been that the occupancy rate of hospital beds has been so high that, when one patient is discharged, the next may have to be put into the bed before it can be properly cleaned and disinfected.

This can only facilitate serious infections, as we have seen. In light of this background, the plan to cut 180 hospital beds (News, March 20) is somewhat bizarre.
