I would like to pass on my heartfelt congratulations to Martyn Irvine for his achievements at the recent World Track Masters (Sport, February 22).
Securing Ireland's first world championship track medals since the 1800s is an outstanding reward for all his hard work.
Hopefully, the Irish government will see the need to fund sports outside of traditional ball games.
Ireland lacks a world-class track and the government needs to help the clubs at grassroots level.
Dundalk's Cuchulainn Cycling Club has received permission to proceed with such a development and, hopefully, now the decision to bypass this project in the most recent round of capital sports funding may be reconsidered.
