Deaf need interpreters

The lack of sign language interpreters in Northern Ireland is preventing deaf people from accessing vital services and experiences that hearing people take for granted.
At present there are only 10 fully qualified interpreters supporting a community of 5,000 sign language users.
With little training available here, those wishing to work as an interpreter have to complete their training in England, all of which is self-funded.
The RNID is working with other deaf organisations and the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure on a solution, but progress is slow.
We are calling on the Government to provide financial investment to train more deaf tutors and interpreters locally.
