Democracy has been sacrificed for sham peace

The totally undemocratic decision to lower the National Standard from Belfast City Hall except on designated days was deliberately taken in defiance of the democratically expressed will of the people and, in the case of the Alliance Party, without any electoral mandate whatsoever.

The results of an Equality Impact Assessment undertaken by Belfast City Council showed that:

General public in favour of existing all year flying of the flag 15,240, in favour of change 500.

Council staff in favour of status quo 71.5%, for change 28.5%.

A majority of visitors and of suppliers were also in favour of retaining the status quo.

In a legitimate democracy the above results would be considered an overwhelming endorsement of the status quo.

However, democracy in Northern Ireland has been sacrificed on the altar of a sham peace at any price.
