Ditch traffic lights to increase flow

Published 09/02/2016

Having followed the arguments for the lowering of the speed limits in Belfast city centre, I am disappointed that the DRD has not considered going the whole way and do without traffic lights and follow the Monderman principle of "naked space", as has been implemented in Drachten in Holland as well as Exhibition Road in Kensington, London. Accidents are rare.

There are other examples in England where, when traffic lights have failed, traffic flow has increased.

The absence of give way markings means the driver must take more care - and with pedestrians wandering about (as they do in Belfast anyway) speed is not an issue.
