Divisive political class ignores its responsibilities
Here are my thoughts on three articles in the Belfast Telegraph (Jan 2).
First, there was a discussion on the possibility of having to sell off Translink, NI Water and Belfast Harbour in an attempt to shore up the disastrous economy - a disaster compounded by the ineptitude of the Stormont politicians.
Next there was a story about unionist and Ukip politicians, whingeing about the absence of the Union flag on the NI driving licence.
Finally, in the Debate NI, section Henry McDonald mused on how our leading sports stars draw support from all quarters of our society and win respect from people the world over. The reason for this united respect was that our champions are above politics.
At this time of a new year the politicians of the two major parties might ponder how low is our respect for them in their persistent determination to sustain old divisions in our society while ignoring the responsibilities of democratic governance.
Divide and crumble!
