Double standard on policing riots

It IS not often I find myself in agreement with Gregory Campbell MP.

He has issued a statement about the riots in England in which he has said it is "intolerable" that different approaches are taken to dealing with riots in England and Northern Ireland. I agree.

While the Government has not ruled out the use of baton rounds and have said that water cannon can be made available with 24 hours' notice, it is unlikely that they will be used.

If this remains the case, then the logical progression of Mr Campbell's argument is that he should call for the end to the use of water cannon, plastic bullets and, indeed, live rounds, in riot situations in Northern Ireland.
