Dennis Kennedy (Saturday Review, July 2) attempts to justify any refusal by MPs to vote through Brexit by pointing to Edmund Burke's distinction between a representative and a delegate.

Just as interesting is the question of what Burke - that strong opponent of grand and utopian political schemes - would have made of what the European Union has become in practice.

My hunch is he would have been a stern critic.
