Education has a key role to play in cycling safety

Published 24/04/2014

THE statistics around cycling injuries and deaths are frightening. For that reason I welcome the first-ever TV advertising campaign by DoE minister Mark H Durkan and Roads minister Danny Kennedy to highlight cycling road safety.

However, much more would be achieved if Education Minister John O'Dowd accepted he has a major part to play in educating our school-age cyclists.

Mr O'Dowd's department, education and library boards, schools, youth clubs and after-school activities each has a role in encouraging cycling training and certifying competence.

High-profile TV campaigns are expensive and difficult to keep going.

On its own, this well-intentioned campaign is in danger of being seen as a quick fix.
