Environment at risk from cutbacks

Any plan for economic recovery that fails to protect our natural environment and ensure we live within environmental limits will fail to address our wellbeing and compromise future generations.

It is, therefore, a great disappointment that the Government has decided to axe the Sustainable Development Commission.

For many years, this body has provided independent advice to politicians on how we can live within environmental limits, helping to make a better place for people and wildlife.

With an urgent need to create a low-carbon, sustainable economy for Northern Ireland's future, I urge the Northern Ireland Assembly to maintain its support for the commission here.

We need our politicians to invest in the things our children will thank us for.
