Evidence now shows home births are safe

Published 23/05/2014

THE article in the Belfast Telegraph headlined 'This is the birth of a child, not the removal of some splinter' (Saturday Review, May 17) needs a clear-headed response.

The NICE proposal that healthy women, experiencing 'straightforward' pregnancies should be encouraged to give birth in a midwife-led unit, or at home, rather than a hospital labour ward is evidence-based and takes safety seriously.

Women have been told for years that giving birth at home is not safe.

Now we have the evidence to show that – for second or later babies – this simply is not the case.
