Executive fails women again over abortion

Published 30/03/2016

It is disappointing that, yet again, the Northern Ireland Executive has wasted an opportunity to trust women.

Members of the Executive should hang their heads in shame at their continued failure to bring clarity to the issue of abortion.

These latest guidelines from the Health Minister do not take into account Justice Horner's ruling and are not human rights compliant.

There is no clarity for women needing abortion services. As we know, guidelines can only explain the law and this latest set has done nothing to address the issue of abortion in any sustainable way.

Northern Ireland's archaic abortion law needs to be updated. How many more women need to come forward to tell their personal stories? Or will their elected representatives continue to ignore them?

Those standing for election would do well to listen to - and trust - women.
