Exposé of legal aid excellent

Yet again, certain red-top newspapers have come under fire for phone-hacking, insensitive publication and illegal intrusion.

But without doubt, if it were not for the responsible Press, the public would not only be a lot worse-off, but corruption by those in higher echelons of society, including politicians, would run riot.

The exposure by the Belfast Telegraph of the cost of the legal aid gravy train (News, December 1) is to be congratulated.

People like me can now hope that this financial burden on the public purse is curtailed.

Legal aid is a necessity in any democratic system, but it needs rigid control.
