Flag claim strikes me as a mistake

Published 01/04/2015

I was watching the William Crawley series recently about the history of Ulster and I noticed in one of the programmes he talked about the Northern Ireland flag and how it was based on the flag of England, using the Cross of St George.

I had always thought that the cross on the flag was the cross of the ancient De Bergh family, which is also used on the flag of the Ancient Province of Ulster and which, although similar, is slightly different.

Perhaps some readers or historians could shed light on this?
