In some quarters, the statement of Paul McVeigh (Sport, November 25) that Catholics feel alienated at Northern Ireland soccer matches because of the playing of God Save the Queen seemed to come as a surprise. The prevailing mood of many Northern Ireland fans has been that, if Catholics took offence at the anthem, then they could either like it or lump it.
The majority of Catholic supporters and players have chosen the latter option and the Northern Ireland team is the worse for it.
