Gerry missed ultimate insult

Thursday, 20 November 2008

When Gerry Adams went to the US recently, I had thought that, to show his affinity with the Taliban, he would have led a protest march and rally to Guantanamo Bay internment camp.

But no, he preferred to show his disdain of Ulster Protestants to the party faithful.

They all took great delight in referring to extreme unionists/Protestant as worse than the Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members and, of course, Afrikaaners with their apartheid.

We can take all that.

I am just pleased that Gerry did not say that were were Irish.

Sad to read this kind of rubbish. You are no better that the man you criticise by your racist and sectarian attitude. Just because you do not like the politics or personality of one man or party in your own little neck of the woods, you stupidly choose to hate an entire people, that is a truly sad attitude...

You reveal yourself to be a racist by your comment. This is all the more odd considering that over here in London, you yourself would be considered as Irish, as a Paddy regardless, same as a farmer from county Kerry...

The writer is indeed Irish, although perhaps not of the Irish Republican variety. Me I'm Irish AND British (or Northern Irish to be specific). In the same way one could be Scottish & British, one can be both British & Irish, they are not mutually exclusive.

The writer needs to think about this.

John, I suggest you keep your minority opinions to yourself.

Yeah Jake, "That Ulster identity and some plans for independence might come in useful." I would prefer Ulster independence ANYTIME than to be linked to the republican south.

Don't worry RMC with such an attitude the Irish would not have you!. You criticize Gerry Adams for his insulting references but in typical NI fashion retort in an equally insulting way.

There is no need to fret. All the protestations of separateness from Ireland have worked. Reality is in the Republic, you will be happy to note, your people are viewed very much as a group apart. This leaves you in an interesting situation as most in Britain see you very much as Irish but we do not! As the world evolves and the Scots talk of independence take care you won't be left behind as Britain changes in the coming decades. That Ulster identity and some plans for independence might come in useful.

The harm that selfish parents cause teenagers

I was hit hard this week by the news that more and more children in the UK are phoning the national helpline Childline because they feel ‘isolated’ and ‘lonely’; I read the research just minutes after delighting in a report confirming that babies are born with a natural disposition to dance whenever they hear rhythm.

We do not need to be told the truth. We need truth to be told

Why Bloody Sunday? There have been bigger death tolls. Fifteen Catholics in McGurk’s Bar in the New Lodge in Belfast the previous month. Eighteen Paras at Warrenpoint in 1979.

Isn't our own Christine Bleakley turning out to be a really class act? Her Sport Relief Waterski Challenge was a kind of David Walliams/Eddie Izzard moment when the Newtownards woman moved officially into the ranks of minor national treasure.

Robert Fisk: Democracy doesn't seem to work when countries are occupied by Western troops

In 2005 the Iraqis walked in their tens of thousands through the thunder of suicide bombers, and voted – the Shias on the instructions of their clerics, the Sunnis sulking in a boycott – to prove Iraq was a "democracy".
