Golf’s a waiting game in Bushmills

Published 14/08/2008

I congratulate Declan O’Loan MLA, on his letter regarding the golf course at Runkerry, near Bushmills (Write Back, August 5).

As a small businessman in the tourist industry in the Bushmills area I have waited nearly eight years for the planners to make a decision.

Yes, eight years! This would be a catalyst for every business in the area and a boost to the village of Bushmills which, when I last counted, had 65% of retail space unused. This village should be the most important in terms of tourism in Northern Ireland, with the Giant’s Causeway at one end and the distillery at the other.

Every tourist coming to this part of Northern Ireland must pass through the main street and with a five-star hotel/championship golf course, perhaps we could attract the British Open back? I urge MLAs to take a leaf out of Mr o’Loan’s book and get this project up and running.
