Golly, it's offensive
Wednesday, 30 January 2008
Letters to the editor should be sent to: 124-144 Royal Avenue, Belfast BT1 1EB. E-mail: writeback@belfasttelegraph.co.uk
It is an offensive caricature and its origins are sinister.
It has
its origins in a children's story where the character is described as 'a
horrid sight, the blackest gnome'. It is a caricature of the blacked-up
minstrels, themselves a caricature.
In effect, the golly is a
caricature of a caricature.
Perhaps Tangled Web (Write Back,
January 24) might care to ask his/her 'black brothers and sisters' what they
think of the doll and whether they would happily respond to the epithet
'wog'.
After that, he (or indeed, she) might like to have a lie
down.
