Heroic women shame Ireland

Published 12/02/2013

The Republic seems to be finding it hard to apologise to the thousands of women detained in so-called Magdalene Laundries during the dark, oppressive era of ultra-Catholic supremacy.

I wonder if saying sorry will require any more courage from politicians than that shown by women who opted to tell their harrowing stories so that the truth might emerge about those nightmare years – an Ireland often recalled with nostalgia by those of us who didn't find ourselves in the cross-hairs of theocratic fervour.
