How do we live in meaningless, random world?

I READ Professor Brian Everitt's letter on the evolutionary origins of morality (Write Back, April 29) with interest.

Perhaps Prof Everitt could tell us, on the basis of his expertise in mathematical statistics, how one can produce an objective basis for making statements about how humans ought to live, if one believes (as the atheist, or sceptic, must do) in a universe randomly thrown out into time and space, going nowhere and meaning nothing, in which humans are nothing more than a random collocation of atoms and molecules?
