All bets are off now that the 11 'supercouncil' model has been vetoed by three DUP ministers.
The Minister for the Environment, Alderman Edwin Poots, absented himself from the vote due to his conflict of interest of being a Lisburn councillor. Was he not aware of this conflict at the beginning, or was it just that this model was not a DUP construct?
Under the doctrine of collective responsibility, will he now resign? And does he accept that all councillors are now on quicksand as their mandate was extended on the presumption of council reform by Stormont?
This betrayal is disturbing, not just because I, at one stage, thought that it would be humbling and a great honour to gain a mandate from my ward to represent them, but more so, in that many people have just lost trust in the political class. Five questions should be asked of any powerful person: What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you use it? To whom are you accountable? How do we get rid of you?
