How we can fix the health service

Published 18/01/2016

(Re 100m sicknote Jan 14) As a health service employee for several decades, recently retired, your headline was no surprise to me. The term 'public service' still means something to some workers.

However, there are some who look at it as a job for life with no penalties for poor performance. Can I suggest to the Health Minister some fairly simple ways to reduce the level of sickness? Firstly, abolish the six months full pay for sick leave. Secondly, make it possible to dismiss an incompetent employee.
