Invest NI is in a no-win situation

There has been a lot of debate recently about Invest NI having to hand back money to the Executive which it has been unable to spend.

Much of this has been based on uninformed judgment about the role of the agency and the manner in which it supports local businesses.

If, due largely to the current economic climate and financial environment, sufficient projects are not forthcoming which meet the agency's investment criteria, then it should be no surprise that there is a significant budget underspend.

If, on the other hand, it is being somehow suggested by those criticising the agency's record that it should simply throw money at businesses for the sake of short-term expediency, then this would be an indefensible waste of taxpayers' money.

I have little doubt that many of those jumping on the bandwagon to lambast the agency today would be the first to complain.

A no-win situation whatever way one looks at it.
