The announcement by the First and deputy First Ministers of an investment in employing teachers to teach basic skills (News, October 11) is to be warmly welcomed.
It is an investment not just in learning, but in providing a platform from which we can genuinely tackle poverty.
Reversing the terrible trends towards higher levels of deprivation and social exclusion requires a lot more than just throwing money at the problem.
Through this investment our Executive is recognising the value of providing professionals who will not just teach basic skills, but also provide support and encouragement. Naturally, there is also the benefit of providing employment to newly-qualified teachers.
