Is gossip in the public interest'?

Regarding recent articles about Rory McIlroy - why do journalists and the media leap to the presumption that sporting excellence opens a doorway into the private life of an individual? The gossip may "interest the public" but it's certainly not in "the public interest", nor for Rory's benefit. He has hit the headlines because of his golfing skills, so let's leave it there.
