It's best to shop around before ordering your oil

Published 15/12/2015

The Consumer Council read with interest Bart Sholto's letter (Write Back, December 7) about his dissatisfaction with his heating oil distributor. We welcome the opportunity to provide advice to oil consumers to help prevent such issues.

Consumers should always shop around before ordering an oil refill. The Consumer Council publishes the latest oil prices each week on its website.

By shopping around consumers can get a cheaper price, but also receive better customer service, such as a more suitable delivery date, or a more appropriate payment method. These are two issues that Mr Sholto highlighted.

The Consumer Council developed (with the Northern Ireland Oil Federation) the Customer Charter. This provides guaranteed service standards for consumers who purchase oil from an NIOF member.

More information about the charter and tips about heating oil are available in our Home Heating Oil 'Switch On' guide.
