It's crucial we retain our heritage buildings
The Belfast Civic Trust was shocked by the demolition of heritage buildings in North Street, Belfast, prior to them being listed by Belfast City Council. This is another example of the failure of the Government's policy in this area.
We have lost a large number of significant heritage buildings in the city centre and others remain under serious threat.
The Crumlin Road courthouse and buildings on Donegall Street and North Street remain in a serious condition, requiring sensitive regeneration.
If we are to realise the inward investment and tourist potential of Belfast as an economic driver, we must retain our heritage buildings. This makes Belfast different from other places.
Will American, or continental, tourists come to a pale imitation of a midwest city? Use of spot-listing and transfer of regeneration powers to the city council should be a priority.
