It's time for the Orange Order to lose its EU funding
Calls from politicians, churchmen and the secretary of state for the Orange Order to call off the protests in Belfast have fallen on deaf ears.
Having called for protests against the determination of the Parades Commission, the Order must be held accountable for the subsequent violence.
Innocent communities and police are once again being subjected to nightly violent attack.
In light of this refusal by the order to call for a complete end to these protests, they must be held accountable.
The significant monetary funding of the Order from both the EU and the Irish government must also be reconsidered.
It defies logic how the Orange Order could be entrusted with EU taxpayers' money. This outrageous decision confers a bogus respectability and legitimacy on a blatantly sectarian group. All EU community-based funding should be channelled through non-sectarian, cross-community elected bodies – not the Orange Order.
