It's time to set good example on living wage
THE Belfast Telegraph reported (News, December 13) that there was a widening in the difference between wage-levels paid to public and private sector workers.
In the same article, East Belfast Alliance MLA Judith Cochrane called for urgent action to reassess (in other words, cut) entry-level pay for civil servants.
Alliance has used this opportunity to target the many poorly-paid individuals at the bottom, rather than focusing on pay restraint for those at the top.
In September, the Assembly debated a Green Party proposal to introduce a requirement which would have meant private companies awarded Government contracts pay the living wage. Alliance's rejection of this ensured that it was not approved.
Rather than competing with the private sector in a race to the bottom, the Government ought to be setting an example.
