It's time we invested in our credit unions

For the past two years, the Assembly's Enterprise Trade and Investment Committee has been involved in trying to improve the limited range of services credit unions offer their members.

As a member of the committee, I am disappointed regarding the lack of progress to date.

We were informed recently by Minister Arlene Foster that it could be the late 2011 before we see legislation passed by Westminster to address this matter.

In February last year, the committee reported the findings of its inquiry into the role of credit unions in the North of Ireland. It emphasised that credit unions improve access to financial services for low income families.

It's a year since the Assembly reported its findings and made its recommendations. In that time there has been little progress.

This is unacceptable and these matters should be dealt with by the Assembly.
