Leaving EU does not mean we abandon Europe

Published 13/04/2016

I fear AP Milroy (Write Back, April 8) has misrepresented the case for leaving the EU. Nobody wants to leave Europe; only the EU, which has a striking democratic deficit.

The Prime Minister had the chance to address this with his (ultimately vacuous) renegotiation. Our forebears fought for freedom and democracy - things lacking in the current EU structures.

Nor would leaving the EU lead to isolation; we would continue to trade with the EU, but would have greater freedom to do so with other non-EU partners again.

The European Space Agency, Europol and Cern all manage to be European organisations without being anything to do with the political union called the EU.
