Legislation isn’t always best tool
With regard to the article by Janet Street-Porter (Comment, September 24) I would like to say that I found it hard to follow her conclusions.
I support equal pay and for many years now equal pay has been enshrined by law.
Women, says Janet, still get a rough deal, however. But there could be other reasons for low numbers of women at board level, such as women being unwilling to put themselves forward due to family commitments.
Therefore legislation, while I am not against it if it helps, may not be the best tool to ensure gender balance. It may be more appropriate to encourage women, by whatever means, to come forward for senior executive roles.
