Let SDLP fund reception for Republic team

Published 27/11/2015

I'm glad that I'm not living in Belfast and seeing my rates spent entertaining two international teams - before they win anything. In addition, councillor Declan Boyle proposes entertaining one from outside Northern Ireland, never mind Belfast.

We need to concentrate on unifying our own nation - a principle set out in the Anglo-Irish Agreement - before we set about a political agenda of unification with another nation.

Should ratepayers bear the cost of players who choose the citizenship of another country and do not pay rates in Belfast?

We hear council budgets are under pressure and ratepayers experience reducing service delivery.

Let Declan Boyle or his party fund the Republic of Ireland team's hospitality costs. At least the IFA pays rates to Belfast City Council to offset their costs. It's time, too, that councils cut hospitality budgets rather than service delivery.
