Let's defend each other against hate
The murderous events in Paris bring to mind the famous words of the German Lutheran pastor, Martin Niemoller. Niemoller spent seven years in a Nazi concentration camp.
This is what he said: First they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.
It has been claimed that there was an illusion of safety in Paris after the January attacks, as they went "only" for free speech and Jewish targets.
I hope we do not fall into the trap that Niemoller so sharply highlights. Everyone is a target and we must all stand up unequivocally, one for the other.
All for one and one for all.
