Long way to go to defeat racism

The shooting of black churchgoers in South Carolina is a heart-wrenching tragedy, but it also stirs deep perplexity, numbness and disbelief that racism remains a blight on our societies.

We have made great strides in achieving racial, cultural and religious harmony, dialogue and understanding. But, racism and prejudice are alive and kicking.

The election of Barack Obama did not diminish racial tensions. As Obama once said: "We must continue our long march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring, and more prosperous world."
