Losing plot on police funds

Wednesday, 9 September 2009

The parlous state of policing Mr Orde implemented during his tenure can only be exacerbated by the suggested £17m cut from the policing budget.

Surely the lack of policing and this latest attack on expenditure merits a positive unionist reaction, namely that all unionist members of the Policing Board immediately resign?

The contrast between policing expenditure and the profligacy of the Office of First and Deputy First Minister is mind-boggling.

For the year ended March 31, 2009, this office had £30,589,000 to assist Government in making well-informed decisions and improving public services; what a sick joke!

They managed to expend a further £39,979,000.00 for the purpose of promoting equality of opportunity, human rights and improving community relations, tackling poverty and social disadvantage and meeting the needs of victims.

Why do the words "losing the plot" come to mind? Are basic human rights not the right to life, liberty and security of person? This of its nature demands an effective police force which we do not have.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
