Loughgall was last of its kind

The proposed plan by Sinn Fein to organise an event in the Sperrin Mountains to mark the 25th anniversary of the IRA raid at Loughgall merits comment.

The terrorist incident in 1987, which led to tragic loss of life, deserves recall. The detail of these type of assaults was not well-reported in the press.

At that time, the IRA tactic of transporting large 'blockbuster' bombs on forklift trucks to attack police stations was in full swing.

They were accompanied by heavily-armed gangs, who opened up a barrage of fire, terrorising the neighbourhood.

This episode proved to be the last of its kind, allowing local communities in Tyrone and Fermanagh to live in peace.
