Loyalists: show respect for Her Majesty's flag

BEFORE embarking on further flag protests, loyalists should consider who they are loyal to.

I assume that they are loyal to the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom. They are hence loyal to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, whose flag is the union flag.

Do you think she is proud of the manner in which the flag is often desecrated, hung randomly on lamp-posts, left until it is torn apart in the wind?

A well-known friend of mine, who now lives in the lower Newtownards Road, was telling us recently that his elderly uncle, who served in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, is disgusted at the flag protests.

As Queen's Scouts, we were taught to respect the flag. It was unfurled at the beginning of each meeting and taken down at the end of each day.

We are fortunate to live in a free, democratic country. Thus, in our loyalty to the Queen, we should accept the democratic decisions of Belfast City Council.
