Mallards should offer Warrenpoint play-off
I wholeheartedly endorse the sentiments of Victor Gordon (Write Back, May 4) about local football referee Ross Dunlop, whose incompetence both in last year's Irish Cup Final and in the recent Warrenpoint Town v Dungannon Swifts league game has now been proven beyond all doubt.
The repercussions of last year's Irish Cup final defeat for Portadown have been felt all season long, leading to the unseemly departure of long-serving boss Ronnie McFall, and, no doubt, Warrenpoint Town will find it similarly difficult to recover from this undeserved and cruel blow.
Another temporary demotion to the First Division for Mr Dunlop would be wholly inappropriate given that, in that scenario, he may conceivably be appointed to officiate at a Warrenpoint Town fixture next season.
However, in the interests of sporting integrity and fairness, Ballinamallard United should now offer Warrenpoint Town a play-off over one or two legs to decide who is relegated.
What a magnanimous gesture that would be from the Fermanagh club, which would have been relegated had it not been for Mr Dunlop, and the winners and losers of this game could console themselves that their fate was, at least, decided fairly and squarely.
