Maybe Thatcher did have right idea on terrorists
Now there is a new kid on the block, the ‘New IRA’, that continues on from the Real IRA and the Continuity (bit of a mouthful) IRA and, of course, the good old Provisional IRA.
Gerry Adams wasn’t kidding when he said all those years ago: “They haven’t gone away, you know.” So, what else will the media call them? Republican dissidents? Republican terrorists? Irish republican terrorists? Or maybe this isn’t politically correct as Easter approaches.
I’m sure the Republic’s new prime minister will not be overly enthused with their tactics, supposedly in the name of Ireland.
However, in the 18 years since the signing of the Belfast Agreement, ironically at Easter, there has been a softly, softly approach to terrorism in Northern Ireland.
Westminster was always concerned about arrests being detrimental to the peace process, but when does a process end and normalisation begin?
Maybe Mrs Thatcher was right: the best way to deal with terrorists is to eliminate them.
