Minister's town centre policy is an indulgence

Published 12/02/2014

MARK H Durkan, in his planning reform consultation, intends adopting a 'town-centre-first' policy. His attempt to 'protect' town centres amounts to nothing more than an indulgence in nostalgia.

The days of consumers converging onto the town centre for five hours on a Saturday are long over.

Today, the Saturday afternoon is no longer sacred. Modern work schedules and lifestyles mean we cannot all conform to the 9-5 lifestyle once taken for granted. Convenience is king and those retailers with their finger on the pulse have adapted.
