More enterprise is key to growth

THE latest statistics on UK cities show that Northern Ireland desperately needs to build a culture of enterprise and to tackle divisions in our society.

The report doesn't reflect some of the brilliant qualities which Belfast and its area has, but it does show issues of concern.

In particular, we're simply not seeing enough people starting up new businesses. That's a problem for which the Executive has to take a large share of responsibility. It simply hasn't put in place the policies to encourage enough enterprise and entrepreneurship.

We're still too reliant on public sector jobs and the private sector is too small. If these issues were resolved, cash could be freed up to start driving Belfast forward.
