Many congratulations to Bradley Wiggins on winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. I hope that Wiggo will be able to improve the image of cycling as a sport, a means of keeping fit and as a clean and cheap way to get around.
It sometimes feels like cyclists are the most reviled form of traffic in Belfast, but a recent survey reveals that this is not the case: tractor drivers take the top spot and cyclists are hated less than caravan owners, Sunday drivers and learners.
Of course, it would be safer and more pleasant for everyone if we could get away from an 'us-and-them' mentality and learn to treat roads as a shared space, where we respect each other's right to be there.
At this season of goodwill, I would like to thank all the motorists who respect the cycle markings on the road and give cyclists space to pull away at junctions.
Your small acts of respect are making our city a better place for everyone.
