NI electorate should welcome bold move
Congratulations to Mike Nesbitt on his leap of faith by joining the Opposition benches in Stormont.
We must be one of the very few liberal democracies in the world which does not have a formal Opposition, but 18 years after the Good Friday Agreement it is a sign of a maturing political society that the mandatory coalition is evolving into a voluntary one.
The DUP and Sinn Fein have the mandate to lead the partnership government, but it is a welcome breath of fresh air that their policies and actions will be scrutinised and held to account by a formal Opposition.
The five-party coalition model was certainly inclusive, but it can be virtually impossible to reach agreement.
Arlene Foster and Martin McGuinness should welcome the opportunity to test-drive a different model and the electorate should embrace this development with open arms.
