NI politicians stuff of ancient satire

Published 18/02/2016

Cadogan West (WriteBack, February 1) is quite correct when he says our political landscape is permanently stuck in the Stone Age by the continuing DUP/Sinn Fein set-up in Stormont.

The calibre of career politician we seem to be lumbered with here reminds me of the politicians in ancient Rome, which my Latin master at Stowe, PG Hunter, used to tell us about from the writings of Cicero and Juvenal.

I recall in one of the satires of Juvenal, he says about the current politicians: “Yesterday, they were unkempt ruffians, today they control our lives, tomorrow they are keepers of the public lavatories.”

This would seem exactly what has happened to Northern Ireland in the 21st century.
