No answer yet to what created the Big Bang
I would like to thank J Brown (Write Back, December 16) for pointing out that empty space is not empty, although it is the nearest thing to nothing that we know, unless we ourselves cease to exist.
As to the question of where space-time and matter came from, the only answer I can give you is that it was created by the Big Bang.
What caused the Big Bang is a very difficult question, because the universe at that instant (which lasted for trillionths of a second) was in such a state that our idea of causality has little or no meaning.
There are, nonetheless, suggested hypotheses as to the cause of the Big Bang, but these cannot yet be tested scientifically, because the energy required for such experiments is, as yet, unattainable.
Until then, J Brown’s question must remain unanswered.
