No one has been asked to take in 'immigrants'

Published 07/09/2016

Regarding Ulster Unionist MLA Jenny Palmer's comments that she wouldn't take in immigrants, no one is actually asking anyone to take in 'immigrants'.

When we talk about welcoming people to Northern Ireland, we are talking about refugees. This distinction is important.

Immigrants come here for work or for other opportunities; refugees come to escape conflict or terror. We should welcome both, but for different reasons and in different ways.

We should also note that no one has been asked to personally house any refugees in Northern Ireland.
